Chronic chest infection

This is an ongoing long-term infection e.g. pneumonia, bronchitis, of one or both lungs. The accompanying inflammation causes lungs to swell and their air sacs (alveoli) to fill with fluid making it difficult to breathe and get enough oxygen. Further complications involving the heart and lungs may occur, such as bacteria in the lung transferring and multiplying in the blood (bacteremia). Cough, thick phlegm that is difficult to shift as well as shortness of breath are common symptoms.
