This means that a person suffers from abnormally low blood glucose. It may be caused by severe fasting but can occur in healthy, well-fed people during a long period of very heavy exercise, for instance, a marathon or when a one-off intake of glucose brings about a surge in the blood-sugar controlling hormone, insulin which causes a quick fall in the levels of energy supplying glucose to the body. Diabetics are at risk of hypoglycaemia from insulin overdose or during exercise if there is inadequate blood sugar control. Blood glucose may also be low following the consumption of a lot of alcohol when little food has been consumed. Symptoms (warning signs) include appearing drunk, slurred speech, poor concentration, truculence, feeling faint/light-headed, trembling and inappropriate sweating. This may very quickly develop into severe hypoglycaemia resulting in coma, convulsions and possible brain damage.
